Kelly Hunter from the Nebraska Volleyball team just won the Female Athlete of the Year award. A few weeks back, Kelly took some time out of her busy day to answer a few questions for FanWord.
2017 was an exceptional year for Kelly and the Huskers. The Senior from Papillion, Nebraska did not just win her second national title with the Huskers in 2017 (5th title in school history), she was also named the Volleyball Player of the Year by PrepVolleyball and VolleyMob, and recognized as the Big Ten Setter of the Year and NCAA Championships Most Outstanding Player. We promise that her endless list of remarkable honors and awards isn’t the only reason why you should give this post a read. Enjoy!
How old were you when you first started with Volleyball?
What is the most memorable experience from your college sports career?! (Positive)
Most memorable moment(s) is winning two National Championships. The 2017 championship was very special to me because it was my senior year and there is no better way to end your college career than on a win.
Comment: Kelly and her teammates also won the Big10 title in 2017.
What is the most memorable experience from your college sports career?! (Negative)
I had to get two surgeries in my time here. I had never missed a practice or a game ever until then, so it was difficult for me to sit out.
What do you enjoy most about Volleyball?
Getting to play with six girls that I love and care for.
What is your #1 goal in your college sports career?
To be a first-team All-American.
Can you describe a typical day for you as a student-athlete?
It has changed a lot every year. This year, I would have lifting and rehab around 9:30, eat lunch after, take a nap, get to practice around 1:30, start early (because I’m a setter) at 2:10, practice until 6:00 or 6:30, shower (if I had time), grab a to-go box from the dining hall, and then go to night class every night from 6:00-8:50.
If you could give one piece of advice to high school athletes in your sport, what would it be?
Get as many reps as you possibly can. Even if it means going to extra open gyms or asking your coach to come early/late.
What is the number #1 thing on your bucket list?
To play with a baby tiger or see the milky way from the middle of nowhere.
If you could be a professional athlete in any sport you want, which one would it be and why?
Tennis, especially doubles. That was one of the other sports I played in high school and was somewhat decent at.
Comment: After looking at your list of awards and honors again, we think you probably made the right choice sticking to Volleyball
What is one thing the majority of people would not know about you?
I’ve broken both of my legs. One when I was nine months old and the other when I was six years old.
If someone would give you $10 million tomorrow, what would you do with it?
I would build my dream house and buy a puppy, or two, or three.
